Ihram is a sacred state of absolute purity that pilgrims undertaking Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages assume for the performance of the holy rituals. For every pilgrim arriving in Makkah through Family Umrah Packages, assuming Ihram from Miqat remains a necessity.

Though the word Ihram is also used to refer to the specific ceremonial clothing that is worn during this time – Ihram is a necessary state which, when a pilgrim assumes, certain things get prohibited for him/her. A pilgrim remains in the state of Ihram until the hajj/umrah rituals are complete; considering all of its prohibitions, precautions and permissibility.

So, here’s a brief description of the things to take of in Ihram.

Clipping of nails and Trimming of Hair

Pilgrims (who are in the state of Ihram) can neither cut their fingernails nor toenails. These are the acts that are only permissible to be done either before assuming Ihram or after denouncing it.

The same goes for hair trimming; it’s prohibited in Ihram. However, falling isn’t counted in this regard as long as it remains a natural hair fall.

Otherwise, if anyone does so knowingly i.e., cuts its nails or hair, a penalty is due for him/her.

Wearing a scent/perfume

A pilgrim who is in the state of Ihram is not allowed to wear any sort of scent. Let it be a perfume, cologne, or fragrance – even using fragrant oils and toiletries isn’t advised. That’s why if you have the need, use only unscented items of personal and oral hygiene i.e., out of caution.

Physical Intimacy with Spouse

When a pilgrim assumes the state of Ihram, it becomes prohibited for him/her to have physical intimacy with a spouse. 

For instance, if a man assumes Ihram but his wife does not, it’s forbidden for her to enable her husband towards physical intimacy by portraying inviting actions. In the same way, when a woman assumes Ihram but her husband does not it's forbidden for him to enable his wife towards physical intimacy by portraying inviting action.

Otherwise, if anyone does so intentionally, a penalty might get due for such a person. In fact, in some cases, it can also make your hajj/Umrah pilgrimage invalid altogether.

Killing an animal

A pilgrim in the state of Ihram cannot hunt/kill animals, in fact, even killing an insect is prohibited. However, if anyone does so in self-defense or in the case of a threat to one’s life, it’s permissible to do so.

Can you change Ihram clothes?

There exists a false notion that changing Ihram clothes denounces the state of Ihram for a person. It’s evident from Islamic teachings that if your Ihram clothing gets dirty, it’s permissible to change it i.e., it would not have any effect on one’s state of Ihram.
